Cost of Quality (COQ) is an approach or metric used to describe and measure how an organization's resources are being used. The four categories of quality costs are;
1. Prevention costs are expenses incurred for preventing the production of defective products such as training costs, process control costs, and quality planning costs.
2. Appraisal costs are the costs incurred in appraising the condition of a product or material with reference to specifications such as cost of inspection and testing and cost of maintaining the integrity of measuring instruments.
3. Failure costs are two types. Internal failure cost is the cost arising from defective units produced that are detected within the plant such as scrap, rework, and retest. Whereas external failure cost is the cost arising from defective products reaching the customer such as product returns and warranty charges.
